Selling is a life skill

There is no shortage of people that would like to earn more money, progress their careers, and have more freedom…..as long as it does not involve selling!

The stereotype of the pushy salesperson is so strong an image that it can seem to many the only way to sell. The same people who say they hate selling are probably doing some form of unpaid selling without realising it. We all engage regularly in sales behaviour. For example:

* in applying for a new job and having to ‘sell’ yourself as being ideal for the role

* asking someone for a date and therefore ‘selling’ yourself that you would be good company

* seeking a discount on a purchase and therefore ‘selling’ the suggestion that the other person should accept less money for their product or service

I have met people who say they could never be in sales, yet demonstrate the ability to help people solve their problems and make better buying decisions.

There are many ineffective sales people about, some more manipulative than others. Is it any wonder when faced with the task of selling most of us run a mile?

The good news that I discovered is that manipulation is most definitely NOT what it takes. The people that sell that way are NOT the top earners in sales. They are the failures. It is these people who not only give selling a bad name, they are probably broke too.

My own experience has shown that you CAN succeed in sales without giving up on your principles, without being dishonest, and without needing a personality transplant!

You may have to work on your mindset and attitude and this will happen if you are open to expanding the way you look at things.

I am not saying that will be easy – but it will be worth the energy. You do not need to become the best sales person in the world but with a little effort and the right attitude you can become successful.

The mental game is half the battle. Often more important than the techniques. Sales is an excellent vehicle for personal development and growth. It might be a bit of a roller coaster ride but definitely worth doing!
